Transmission lines and antennas (Efterår 2003)

Kursuskode : ETLAE-U01
ECTS Point : 7,5 Status : Tilvalg for den valgte retning
Revideret : 05/11 2003 Oprettet : 15/03 2002
Placering : 5-7 semester Timer pr. uge : 4
Længde : 1 semester Undervisningssprog : Engelsk hvis der er engelsksprogede tilstede

Målsætning : TLAE provide the student with basic knowledge about radio waves and high-frequency design i.e. high-frequency transmission lines (design and measurements) and radiation through space (antenna-theory, design and measurements).
Gain experience using basic high frequency measuring technique.
Enable the student to understand transmission of information through traditional transmission lines and cables and understand systems based on transmission theory i.e. acoustic and optic systems.

The study module provides an understanding of the subjects and allows the student to continue studying the literature within the field.
Hovedindhold : 1. Modelling physical components when moving into high-frequency design
2. Practical implications of time delay in systems
3. Distribution of electromagnetic energy in free field, into transmission lines and wave guides
4. Reflection theory, standing waves and impedance matching
5. Transmission- and strip-line design
6. Basic antenna theory, design and measurements
Undervisningsform : The curriculum consists of overview classroom sessions combined with group work of 4-5 small practical design/measuring sessions related to high frequency behaviour of physical components, reflection on transmission lines, impedance matching and antennas.
Krævede forudsætninger : Math, Analogue and digital design equivalent to 4th semester level.
Anbefalede forudsætninger : -
Relationer : TLAE is mandatory to participate Wireless communications hardware (WCHE). TLAE is a good supplement to understand high speed digital design (ADDW).
Prøveform : Mundtlig evaluering på grundlag af kursusopgaver
Censur : Intern
Bedømmelse : 13-skala
Bemærkninger : The groups will hand in reports/measuring journals for each practical session which must be accepted to attend the exam. Exam will be oral based on the reports and curriculum.
The curriculum comprises all subjects stated in the reading list, all Homework and all theory and techniques used in the course assignments.

At the examination each student is allocated 15 minutes.
The examination is a group examination but the marking is individual.
The evaluation is based on a general impression of the level achieved by the student relative to the objective of the course. The evaluation is based on the reports and on the oral performance.

Each member of the group presents a subject from the reports. The duration of the presentation is approximately 5-7 minutes.
The group is required to coordinate the presentations in such a way that the major aspects of the curriculum are covered; that the presentations are different and that each individual presentation has a good span.

After the presentation the supervisor and the external examiner pose questions inspired by the presentation and the curriculum. The questions are a priori individual but may – if found relevant by the supervisor or the external examiner – form the basis of a broader group discussion.

During the evaluation by the supervisor and the external examiner, the project group leaves the room. Afterwards the group is summoned and the individual marks are explained.

If the student doesn’t pass the examination, the student is given guidance on how to improve the changes of passing.
