Placement : | 6. semester | Hours per week : | 4 |
Length : | 1 semester | Teaching Language : | English |
Principal Content : | Materials selection in this course is based on the following: The interaction between material, function, process and shape The headlines for the materials selection procedure are as follows: Requirement analysis, Requirement at function profile, Properties profile, Environmental aspects including recycling Economic aspects, Accessibility (availability) Introduction of the different types of materials: Metals, Ceramics, Polymers, Elastomers, Glasses and Composites Including crystal structures, the different types of materials, phase diagrams, elastic and plastic deformation, deformation mechanisms, stiffness (modulus of elasticity (E)), fracture mechanics, strengthening mechanisms, corrosion or destruction mechanism, CCT- and ITT - diagram Materials properties: Tensile-, yield-, fatigue- and creep strength, modulus of elasticity, impact properties etc. Destruction of materials (corrosion etc.). Recycling, Interaction between structures and properties, Material selections based on the knowledge of properties caused by the structure of materials in delivery condition (finished or semi-finished products), f. ex. crystal structure in metals, microstructure, macrostructure, grain size, crystallinity in polymers etc. The possibility of changing properties in a product by post treatment. F. ex. changing the microstructure of metal by heat treatment. Creating of properties in selected materials based on structures changing e.g. thermo mechanical processes in steel, Surface treatment, Joining of materials, Cases. |
