Objective : | Today nearly any networking device or application must have management facilities, so it can be controlled and monitored from a remote console. This course will present a practical and theoretical survey of the basic concepts, principles and practice of network management with special focus on SNMP network management (Simple Network Management Protocol). At the end of the course the student will: Understand the basic concepts, principles and practice of network management. Have the ability to understand professional articles and documentation concerning network management. Know where to get more information concerning network management issues. Have the ability to implement network management systems. Have the ability to develop network management features to devices and applications and to develop management applications. |

Teaching method : | Class teaching, lab-exercises and one group project. Approximately 60% of the time will be spent on lab-exercises and the group project. |

Remarks : | Oral group examination with individual marks. The examination is based on a group project plus the contents of the textbook. To participate in the examination you have to perform one group project during the semester and hand over a report concerning the project at the end of the semester. Each group can select a project of its own choice - but it must consist of both a theoretical and a practical part. |
