Objective : To extend and vary students’ command of English, both for general and specific purposes. To enable students to make effective oral presentations on given subjects. To introduce the students to the social, cultural, and political background of the United Kingdom. To introduce students to structures and terminology in the English-speaking business world. To support the interdisciplinary project work.
Principal Content : British social, political, and cultural background. Business-related texts and terminology. Oral and written communication tasks.
Teaching method : Class instruction with group work and student presentations. A mandatory oral presentation. Submission of one mandatory written assignment and a mandatory written report. The problem statement for the written report must be approved by the teacher. The report must be 2000-2500 words long. Emphasis is put on logical structure, clarity and linguistic accuracy. Remarks : A prerequisite for the examination is that the mandatory assignments have been submitted on time and have been approved. The oral examination falls into two sections: 1. The student presents a summary of an unseen text after 30 minutes’ preparation time. Dictionaries and other study aids are allowed. In connection with the presentation, questions relating to the examination syllabus will be posed. 2. The student makes an oral presentation of 8-10 minutes based on the report submitted during the semester. Notes and visual aids are permitted. In the evaluation of the presentation emphasis will be laid on fluency and correctness of language as well as organization of content and clarity.
