Objective : -To provide the student with the skills required to undertake technical projects as part of a group.

The student should be able to:

Plan and undertake a project as a group.
Formulate relevant problems.
Choose and apply appropriate development methods.
Undertake critical collection and processing of information.
Structure and write a technical report.
Present methods and results orally.
Evaluate results and draw conclusions.

Principal Content : -Introduction to group work.
Introduction to project and development processes.
Introduction to process and project documentation.

Two projects are undertaken: one in digital design implemented using VHDL and one in programming implemented using Java. Each project is documented in a separate report.

Teaching method : -The projects are undertaken in groups of 3 to 5 students.
Projected related theory and supervision is provided.

Relations : -PROJ1 is taken in conjunction with PROG1 and DIGE1.

Remarks : -Oral examination based upon the products produced and delivered reports.

- External examination

A grade is awarded according to the 7 level scale:
2 for the fulfilment of planning and formulation objectives.
7 when additional application and explanation objectives are met.
12 when additional discussion and assessment objectives are met.
A mark is given for each project. In order to pass the course, both marks must be at least 2. The final mark is the average of the two marks, rounded up to the closest mark on the 7 scale.

- A course in information mining is provided by the library during the course.

Both reports must be delivered to obtain admission to the examination.
Before the examination the group presents the products with each student giving a 5 minute, well prepared presentation for each project. It is required that the group coordinates the presentations such that the products’ main topics are covered and that each presentation is different and has a broad technical content.

Each student is allocated 20 minutes for the individual examination.
During the examination, the teacher and external examiner pose questions arising from the presentations and reports.
The assessment is based upon the level the student has reached in respect to the course objectives. This is derived from the reports, the oral performance and the product produced.
