Målsætning : Most products and machines, such as DVD players and heavy lift cranes, involve some kind of controlled movement; they also require mechanisms to move. This course aims to provide the analytical and conceptual tools to design such mechanisms, where you will be asked to make use of your knowledge in fundamental disciplines, in particular statics, dynamics, mathematics, material selection and product design. At the end of this course you will be able to:

- Generate alternative configurations for mechanisms that follow a particular trajectory, need to occupy certain positions, or perform special functions using synthesis tools.
- Analyze a mechanism using its kinematic characteristics (position, velocity and acceleration).
- Evaluate the best solution from different mechanisms configurations using criteria such as size, performance parameters and operation environment.
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

• Sketch a mechanism"s kinematic chain and determine its type and mobility.
• Design 4 and 6 bar planar mechanisms for function, path and motion generation, using graphical and analytical methods.
• Design new mechanisms based on transformation of existing ones by using equivalent linkages.
• Determine the position of any point in a planar mechanism using graphical and analytical methods.
• Determine the velocity and acceleration of any point in a planar mechanism using graphical and analytical methods.
• Calculate quality parameters such as transmission angles and mechanical advantage of a planar mechanism.
• Calculate the static and dynamic forces in a planar mechanism.
• Use software tools to analyze and design planar mechanisms.
• Evaluate the best solution among different mechanisms configurations, using criteria such as size, performance parameters, quality parameters, and operation environment.
• Apply mechanism synthesis tools to the design of products with moving parts.
Hovedindhold : Introduction to mechanisms, fundamentals of kinematics, graphical and analytical synthesis, position analysis, velocity analysis, acceleration analysis, static and dynamic force analysis, cam design, gear trains, quality evaluation of mechanisms, industrial cases and examples of the design process of mechanisms in industry.
Undervisningsform : The teaching is based on "learning by doing". There will be introductory and summing up lectures. Project work in small groups includes tutorial exercises, assignments, lab exercises, computer simulations, use of internet search engines and case studies.
Krævede forudsætninger : Applied Mechanics 2 (ME-MEC2) or equivalent.
Anbefalede forudsætninger : Mechanical Design (ME-MED).
Relationer : The course methods can be used in many courses and projects, such as the Bachelor project.
Prøveform : Mundtlig evaluering på grundlag af kursusopgaver
Censur : Intern
Bedømmelse : 7-trinsskala
Bemærkninger : This is a relevant optional course in the study program “Engineering Design & Industrial Innovation” offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It is, however, a methodological course for engineering students, specializing in industrial and product design.
