Placering : 6. semester Timer pr. uge : 4
Længde : 1 semester Undervisningssprog : Engelsk

Målsætning : The course covers the standard topics of heat and mass transfer processes with an emphasis on principles and real-world applications. It provides a balanced mix of fundamentals of transport phenomena as well as applications to practical engineering systems.

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

• Determine heat balance for one dimensional heat conduction in systems with and without heat generation in the system.
• Calculate temperature distribution in simple systems.
• Determine convective heat transfer for simple systems.
• Calculate heat transfer and temperature distribution for free and forced convection for plane surfaces and for flow around pipes.
• Calculate heat transfer and temperature distribution for flow in pipes.
• Perform calculations on heat exchangers.
• Calculate heat transfer by radiation between surfaces.
• Determine energy balance for systems with combined heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation.
• Determine mass transfer in systems, using diffusion and Fick’s law.
• Analyze phase change phenomena.
• Use the computer software EES (Engineering Equation Solver) for the solution and the visualization of transport phenomena.
• Read engineering literature on heat and mass transfer.
Hovedindhold : Introduction and basics. Heat conduction equation. Steady and transient heat conduction. Numerical methods in heat conduction. Fundamentals of convection. Internal and external forced convection. Natural convection. Heat exchangers. Radiation heat transfer. Introduction to mass transfer. Diffusion. Fick’s law. Phase change phenomena. Boiling and condensation. Case studies and examples from industry, such as cooling of electronic equipment, heating and cooling of buildings, and refrigeration and freezing of foods.

Undervisningsform : The teaching is based on "learning by doing". There will be introductory and summing up lectures. Project work in small groups includes tutorial exercises, assignments, lab exercises, computer simulations, use of internet search engines and case studies.
Krævede forudsætninger : Thermodynamic Modeling (ME-TRM) or equivalent.
Anbefalede forudsætninger : Fields and Flows (ME-FFL).
Relationer : The course methods can be used in many courses and projects, such as the Bachelor project.
Prøveform : Mundtlig evaluering på grundlag af kursusopgaver
Censur : Intern
Bedømmelse : 7-trinsskala
Bemærkninger : This is a relevant optional course in the study program “Engineering Design & Industrial Innovation” offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It is, however, a methodological course for engineering students, specializing in energy systems and power plants.
