Course code : ME-PRJ3-U1
ECTS Credits : 10 Status : Compulsory
Revised : 13/07 2009 Written : 13/07 2009
Placement : 3. semester Hours per week : 10
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English

Objective : To acquire skills and knowledge in innovation and problem identification, applied to energy processes and product development, using both technical and industrial design, where the quality of the project work is the main issue.

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

• Use the basic steps of the product development process in a proper manner.
• Be innovative in developing concepts for the industrial design process.
• Identify and describe a technical problem properly.
• Perform a thorough product design and process realization, using topics from the related semester courses.
• Select the optimal materials, using the CES EduPack Materials and Processes selection software.
• Carry out the necessary machine elements and strength of materials calculations for the main parts of the product.
• Carry out the necessary dynamics, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics calculations for the main parts of the product.
• Produce technical drawings, including assembly drawing, using SolidWorks.
• Use SolidWorks’ Simulation software to validate the technical aspect of the product.
• Evaluate the safety of the product according to known standards.
Principal Content : The project involves the analysis and design of an energy system such as an engine, turbomachinery or a thermal power plant. It includes problem solving, concept development, function description, materials selection, brainstorming, and technical drawings, together with design and safety calculations.
Teaching method : Introductory lectures. Project work in small groups, including computer simulations, laboratory exercises, use of internet search engines and case studies.
Required prequisites : ME-PRJ2
Recommended prerequisites : -
Relations : ME-TRM, ME-MED, ME-MEC2, ME-FFL.
Type of examination : Oral examination based on a project
