Course code : ME-SPD-U1
ECTS Credits : 5 Status : Compulsory
Revised : 26/01 2009 Written : 26/01 2009
Placement : 2. semester Hours per week : 4
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English

Objective : The aim of the course is to make the student capable of designing product and concepts and of involving environmental issues in product development and design.
The environmental issues will include environmental effect on global, regional and local levels, resources, waste treatment and working environment.
The student should be able to include these effects in a life cycle perspective of a product and thereby improve the product from an environmental point of view.
The student will get experience in different methods of life cycle assessments and environmental management systems.
The course also includes mechanical concept development, from mechanical system design, through concept selection to concept documentation.

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

• Describe environmental effects and working environment.
• Define a goal for a LCA and set relevant functional unit for a product.
• Make a life cycle assessment of a product or a system using various LCA tools.
• Use the LCA to improve or develop products.
• Perform the whole process of: Mechanical System Design, User-Scenario, Requirement Specification, Competitor product screening, concept design, concept selection, experimenting, prototype evaluation, concept description and documentation.
Principal Content : Life cycle thinking. Improvement of products by new materials or improved production process (Ecodesign). Methods for life cycle assessment and using LCA in design. LCA assessments with MECO and a PC tool.
Environmental effects, resources, waste disposal. Working environment. CSR and environmental management systems. MMI (Man-Machine-Interface) Design. Concept development process.
Teaching method :
Required prequisites : -
Recommended prerequisites : -
Relations : The methods in this course should be used in other projects. In ‘Project 2’, a life cycle assessment of the chosen system should be conducted.
Type of examination : Look under remarks
