Objective : | The Danish government as well as the regional and municipal authorities have issued ambitious goals and plans for building a sustainable future by developing and implementing alternative practices and technological solutions to the needs of society in relation to sustainable development. The students will be introduced to skills and competences, to achieve the basic knowledge of sustainable building and energy design aiming at designing sustainable buildings and residential areas. Learning objectives: A student who has fully met the objectives of the course will be able to: -Develop and analyze proposals for buildings and housing areas and that can be characterized as sustainable -Develop a project documented with drawings and calculations and assessing the economic consequences -Reflecting on and giving arguments for chosen solution - Reporting on group work and the cooperation -Explain the group’s collaboration |

Principal Content : | Sustainable buildings: Introduction to the concept, plan and design sustainable buildings Energy: Using passive and active energy design to optimize the design of the building in order to minimize the building"s energy consumption. Renewable energy. Rating. Materials: sustainable materials, Life Cycle Assessment methodology and tools, Evaluate the use of recycled materials. Water: Assess and projecting using rainwater Standards relating to sustainability: energy calculations, the sustainability concept Cradle to Cradle, Review of certification standards. Economic Assessment using a financial planning tool. |

Teaching method : | • The students are divided into project groups in which the project work will be developed. • Problem Based Learning is a combination of theory, case studies and project work. • Lessons will be based on interaction between lecturers presentations, tutorials and presentation of the acquired knowledge and on the principle “Learning by Teaching”. • The teaching method will be based on examples, where students are provided with an outline proposal. The students develop a project proposal followed by parts of the final project. |
