ECTS Credits : 5 Status : Compulsory
Revised : 13/02 2005 Written : 11/06 2003
Placement : 2. semester Hours per week : 0
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : Danish

Objective : The aim of the geological part of this course is to give the student a general knowledge of geological materials, processes and terminology and knowledge of the geology of Denmark. The student learns to interpret maps displaying the local geology providing a basis for geotechnical projects, regional planning of materials and resources evaluation and environmental risk assesment. The geotechnical part of the course gives the student a basic knowledge of soil mechanics. The course comprises soil classification, calculation of tensions in soil (whitout water movement) and theory of soil consolidation. Finally the student must be able to undertake geotechnical investigations in order to evaluate the engineering properties of soils.
Principal Content : Minerals and rock types, particularly sediments. Weathering processes. Erosion, transport and seidmentation by water, wind and ice. Geology of Denmark (mainly younger deposits). Raw materials and groundwater resources in Denmark. Soil investigations.
