Basic JAVA Programming (Spring 2005)

Objective : To give an introduction to the use of the object oriented programming language JAVA. To get basic knowledge of the different elements in JAVA. There will be time to get a routine in JAVA programming including development of GUI using visual JAVA tools.To develop the students’ ability to describe, analyse, and develop alternative solutions for different programming assignments.
Principal Content : Basic programming principles in JAVA The object oriented paradigm in JAVA GUI (AWT and Swing) for development of applications and applets mainly by using Jbuilder JAVA in relation with networks. Application level and protocol design by using TCP/IP. Introduction to threads. JAVA in relation to Databases.
Teaching method : Exercises and classroom teaching. The exercises will be about 70% of the study module and consist of working with computers. One larger semester assignment added some of the week assignments are to be handed in. The semester assignment will contain elements like using JAVA in connection with client/server programming and in connection with SQL.

Remarks : Oral group examination based on the semester assignment, and the week assignments added the report. The instructor hands out the project, but the students own ideas can be accepted. The practical work can be done single-handedly or in teams of no more than 3. At the examination there will be given an individual grade. Normally there will be given 20 min. for each student. The group present shortly their work after which the instructor and the examiner ask questions to the presentation, to the report, the project in general and to the week assignments added the report. The grade will primary be build on the report and on the functionality of the product.
