Wireless communications hardware (Spring 2006)

Course code : EWCHE-U01
ECTS Credits : 7,5 Status : Optional for specified Programme
Revised : 26/01 2006 Written : 19/01 2004
Placement : 5-7 semester Hours per week : 4
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English

Objective : The student should be able to:
-optimize microwave amplifiers using S-parameters.
-understand basic phase locked loops.
-understand RF-oscillators.
-take non-linearity and noise into account when designing communication systems.
-understand the propagation of electromagnetic fields and know basic antenna theory.
Principal Content : S-parameters and Matching.
Stability.
Phase Locked Loops.
Oscillators.
Non-Linearity.Propagation of Radio waves.
Modulation and Communications systems.
Antennas.
Teaching method : 50% lectures/dialog and 50% practical design or communications planning. During the practical part of the course, the students will design and build parts of a high frequency communications system. The students must in this design consider subjects of communications planning, and use this to evaluate system performance.
Required prequisites : Knowledge of transmission lines, reflection coefficients, Smith Chart, S-parameters, electric and magnetic fields and noise. (Like High Frequency Electronics - BHSE and ENAME).Knowledge of modulation forms - analog and digital.
Recommended prerequisites : -
Relations : -
Type of examination : Oral examination based on assignments
External examiner : Internal
Marking : Scale of 13
Remarks : Oral examination based on group-made products (Reports and presentation including demonstration of constructed analog hardware)

Students taking SATT in the same semester can do a common system design project. The specific rules for this are described in the assignment paper.

Evaluation:
The evaluation is based upon
- the curriculum
- the communications assignment and
- a presentation of the communications assignment and an individual examination
On the same day as the examination, before the examination, the group must together present the exercises and projects, including a demonstration of constructed analogue hardware. Each student is allocated 10 minutes for their presentation. The group is required to coordinate the presentations in such a way that the major aspects of the exercises and projects are covered, that the presentations are different and that each individual presentation has a good technical span.
At the presentation the external censor and the supervisor will be the audience. The supervisor takes notes for the examination.
Examination: Each student is allocated 20 minutes (all in all). The examination is individual. The supervisor and the external examiner pose questions inspired by the reports and the presentation. The evaluation is based on a general impression of the level achieved by the student relative to the objective of the course. The evaluation is based on the reports, the presentation and the demonstration ( the functionality of constructed analogue hardware).
After the examination students, who wish so, may request (by email) a consultation after the exam, where the exam and the project report can be discussed with the supervisor. At this consultation, students that have not passed the exam, will be guided on how to work purposeful towards passing a new exam. The consultation will normally take place in the beginning of the following semester.
A mark in the 13-scale is given. Students following the Danish line are allowed to hand in reports in Danish.
