Grundlæggende højhastighedselektronik (forår 2008) (Forår 2008)

Kursuskode : EBHSE-U01
ECTS Point : 7,5 Status : Tilvalg for den valgte retning
Revideret : 23/01 2008 Oprettet : 20/08 2003
Placering : 5 - 7. semester Timer pr. uge : 4
Længde : 1 semester Undervisningssprog : Engelsk

Målsætning : Purpose:
The study module is designed to give the student basic competence’s in Transmission Line theory and S-parameters and form the background for further studies in Microwave theory and practice (WCHE) and to be familiar with components at high frequencies.

Learning outcomes:

The student must be able to:

1. Use concepts, theory, components and methods
introduced in the course.
2. Develop and use mathematical models of
components and systems as introduced in the
course.
3. Design, calculate, analyze, model, simulate,
construct and test analogue hardware.
4. Plan, specify, cooperate, document and use
relevant engineering terms and language.
5. Relate specifications, calculations, simulations
and measurements and draw clear and relevant
conclusions.
6. Hypothesize the reasons for differences between
simulated and actual results and discuss the
hypothesis from relevant theory or from relevant
simulations and test.

Hovedindhold : Behavior of components at high frequencies.
Transmission Lines.
Reflection of signals depending upon load impedance.
Impedance matching.
Smith Chart.
Time domain reflection- and frequency domain measurements.
S-parameters and S-parameter measurements (Two-port measurements).
Use of measuring instruments for High Frequencies

Undervisningsform : 50% lectures/dialog and 50% practical design or communications planning.

During the practical part of the course, the students make 3 course assignments within component measurements, time reflection, frequency domain and high frequency amplifier design.
The student will learn about the practical aspects of high-speed electronic design (high frequency design in communication) during the assignments and how to use measurement equipment for High Frequencies.

In some weeks, especially in the end of course, all the time may be set aside for a large assignment in high frequency amplifier design. You may suggest an assignment for the last one – but it must fulfill the objectives to be approved.

The group can discuss the assignments with the teacher inside the scheduled time. Outside the scheduled time students must use e-mail. Response time objective: E-mails will be answered before the end of the following workday.

Krævede forudsætninger : Knowledge of electric and magnetic fields, basic electronics including low-frequency amplifier design (equivalent to ELF3 and KRA3).

Anbefalede forudsætninger : -
Relationer : ENAME (recommended to take in parallel), WCHE (BHSE is a prerequisite for WCHE)
Prøveform : Mundtlig evaluering på grundlag af kursusopgaver
Censur : Intern
Bedømmelse : 7-trinsskala
Bemærkninger : Internal, oral examination based on group-made products ( Reports and presentation demonstrating constructed analogue hardware)
7 step scale
Grades are given as follows:
02
For a minimum of basic knowledge and routine corresponding to the learning outcomes points 1 and 2.
7
For knowledge, routine and behaviour corresponding to the learning outcomes points
1 to 4.
12
For knowledge, routine, behaviour and reflective skills corresponding to all the learning outcomes points 1 to 6.
Evaluation:
The evaluation is based upon
- the curriculum
- the assignments and
- a presentation of the assignments and an individual examination
On the same day as the examination, before the examination, the group must together present the exercises and projects, including a demonstration of constructed analogue hardware. Each student is allocated 10 minutes for their presentation. The group is required to coordinate the presentations in such a way that the major aspects of the exercises and projects are covered, that the presentations are different and that each individual presentation has a good technical span.
At the presentation the external censor and the supervisor will be the audience. The supervisor takes notes for the examination.
Examination: Each student is allocated 20 minutes (all in all). The examination is individual. The supervisor and the external examiner pose questions inspired by the reports and the presentation. The evaluation is based on a general impression of the level achieved by the student relative to the objective of the course. The evaluation is based on the reports, the presentation and the individual examination.
After the examination students, who wish so, may request (by email) a consultation after the exam, where the exam and the project report can be discussed with the supervisor. At this consultation, students that have not passed the exam, will be guided on how to work purposeful towards passing a new exam. The consultation will normally take place in the beginning of the following semester.
A mark in the 7 step scale is given.

Students following the Danish line are allowed to hand in reports in Danish.

Study Group if few students.
Do few students want to participate in this study module it will be changed into a study group with a reduction in the content.
In this case the content will be adjusted according to the subjects of the assignments.
Students and lecturer decide the assignments in co-operation at the start of the semester.
