Mathematics 1 (Spring 2008) |
|||
Course code : | EMATE1-U1
ECTS Credits : | 10 | Status : | Compulsory |
Revised : | 01/02 2008 | Written : | 28/08 2007 |
Placement : | 1. semester | Hours per week : | 8 |
Length : | 1 semester | Teaching Language : | Danish and English |
Objective : | Purpose: The development of mathematical key competences for engineers in the fields of IT, Electronics, and Wireless Technology-Economics. The course balances a theoretical and an applicational aim, and there is a strong emphasis on project-orientation and the use of computers. Learning outcomes: Presented with the task of solving mathematical problems in a practical context the student must demonstrate the ability to • define and describe the fundamental problems and concepts introduced in the course – using proper mathematical notation, • define and describe the fundamental methods for solution introduced in the course – using proper mathematical notation, • define and describe a feasible algorithm based on a mathematical method for solution - allowing subsequent implementation in MATLAB, • define and motivate a strategy for the verification and testing of a proposed implementation of an algorithm for solution • apply MATLAB’s pre-defined datastructures, functions, and logical structures in the development of own software, • apply a defined strategy for the verification and testing of the implementation of an algorithm for solution, • analyze and discuss the relationship between problem, solution method and computed results, • document the analysis of a mathematical model. |

Principal Content : | Using the software system MATLAB on a PC. Linear algebra, basics. Signals and systems. Complex numbers Number systems and number representation. Polynomials. Infinite series. Fourier series in continuous time. Differential equations, in project context. |
||
Teaching method : | Classroom lectures. Projects and group work on the basis of exercises, problems, assignments and projects using MATLAB on a PC.
Required prequisites : | Mathematics corresponding to the A-level of the Danish gymnasium.
Recommended prerequisites : | As specified in the EIT-department document: ”MAT1 prerequisites”. Programming experience on a beginner’s level. |
||
Relations : | MAT1 is obligatory and is taught on the IT-program, the Electronics-program and on the Wireless-Economics specialization.
Type of examination : | Oral examination
External examiner : | Internal
Marking : | 7 step scale | ||
Remarks : | The exam is oral and individual based on a project assignment containing a miniproject and a number of supplementary problems. The mini- project requires the analysis of a mathematical model using MATLAB. The assignment is handed out 3 days before the examination and may be solved individually or in groups as decided by the students. The solution is presented at the exam and will be used as the basis of the examination. A grade from the 7-step scale is given in agreement with the following main departmental guidelines: 2 for the full accomplishment of the task to define and describe, and a partial accomplishment of the task to explain and apply. 7 for the additional full accomplishment of the task to explain and apply, and a partial accomplishment of the task to discuss and analyze. 12 for the additional full accomplishment of the task to discuss and analyze Two project assignments are given during the semester. Responses to both must be handed in and accepted in order to achieve admission to the exam. The project work is done in groups and will require development of a MATLAB-program for the solution and analysis of a practical mathematical problem. The response will be a report presenting the documentation of the following working process: • A preliminary study of relevant theory. • Problem statement and delimitation. • Statement and analysis of the method for solution. • Implementation plan and development of algorithms for solution, i.e. the logic of • The development of MATLAB-code for the solution and analysis of the problem. • Verification, test, and experimental analysis of the implemented solution strategy. MAT1 is taught jointly on the IT-program, the Electronics-program and the Wireless-Economics specialization. The following two projects are given as they are relevant to all three fields of work: • The introduction and study of differential equations and their applications. • A mathematical model based on Fourier Series and differential equations of the transmission of a periodic analog signal through a cable. |
