Applied Mechanics 1 (Spring 2009)

Course code : ME-MEC1-U1
ECTS Credits : 5 Status : Compulsory
Revised : 26/01 2009 Written : 26/01 2009
Placement : 2. semester Hours per week : 4
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English

Objective : To obtain an understanding of the link between the study of mechanics and materials in structural design. To provide a firm foundation for later study of Finite Element Methods (FEM).
The course treats the fundamentals of mechanics of materials and the students will learn to analyse stiffness and strength of simple structures and their sub-components, including the influence of material properties.
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
• Use statics and free body diagrams to determine reactions and internal forces.
• Determine stress and strain in simple, linear elastic design elements using the direct stiffness method.
• Determine equilibrium, deformation and the strain energy of simple structures.
• Design and analyse axial, torsion and flexural structures as well as structures for combined loading.
• Design structures for fracture.
• Design and analyse slender compressive structures.
• Use computer software, currently COMSOL’s Structural Mechanics Module, for the solution and the graphical illustration of structural design problems.
• Read engineering literature on mechanics of materials.
Principal Content : Mechanics and materials. Total structural design and analysis. Design of axial, torsion and flexural structures. Combined static loading. Fracture. Design of column structures against buckling. The software “Cambridge Engineering Selector” is used for interactive material selection in structural design.
Teaching method : The teaching is based on “learning by doing”. There will be introductory and summing up lectures. Project work in small groups includes computer simulations, use of internet search engines and case studies.
Required prequisites : -
Recommended prerequisites : -
Relations : Projects 2-4, Applied Mechanics 2, Computer-aided Mechanical Design and Applied Mathematics 1.
Type of examination : Look under remarks
External examiner : External
Marking : 7 step scale
Remarks : Oral examination based on a number of design projects. The final evaluation of each student will be based on an assessment of the presentation of projects and the group report.

This course is primarily for students enrolled in the program “Engineering Design & Industrial Innovation”, offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
