Objective : Centred around the students" development of their own business ideas, this course aims to enable the student to understand, take part in, create and manage inovation processes. The goal is to fully understand and be able to apply innovative tools to the practical development of a business idea within a company os as an individual start up.
Based on a needs assessment, the students are facilitated through a process that starts with a single idea and ends up with a full-fledged business case. The development of the business plan is the course"s backbone. The course consists of a set of modules, and the students are expected to contribute greatly as the course"s output is the mentioned business case. The objective is also to understand the process of developing a business case, and the students are to write complimentary process description detailing the use of tools and decision-making methods. The students should be able to use the subjects andt tools to evaluate innovative products and services, internally as well as externally, e.g. in regards to preparing decision material for external financial sources.
Principal Content : - Management of creative innovation processes with the aid of relevant project management tools for incremental as well as blockbusting innovation
- Team: Tools for efficient team work, team performance manuals
- The business case: Establishing plans, evaluating the project and creating relevant stop-go criteria for continuation or discontinuation of projects. What possibilities are there for the entrepreneur in completion of the project and maintaining ownership of the project? What type of possibilities and obstacles do the projects encounter when realised without the backing of an accepted and credible ownership group?
- The basic model used is the Dee Hock project development model
- Innovation in Denmark: Visiting local companies working with innovation on a daily basis (4 hours)
- Idea development models and tools
- Practical knowledge and know-how about facilitating idea development and decision making processes
Teaching method : Action-based learning: Lectures are intertwined with group work and student presentations.
The students produce problem definitions and are judged on their ability to define a problem and develop an operational scope for the business plan"s development. The disposition must show a logical structure of the project in compliance with the problem definition.
The actual report must have a length of 5-10 normal pages, all-inclusive.
When grading the paper a logical structure, clarity and the viability of the idea is evaluated. The students are also to hand in a 1-2-page process description detailing their ability to reflect on decisions and drive the project further.
Required prequisites : For Export Engineering students: First year and a minimum of 130 ECTS.
Recommended prerequisites : An insight into marketing and microeconomics will be beneficial.
For non-Export Engineering students: Two years of university studies completed.

External examiner : Internal
Marking : 7 step scale
Remarks : Oral examination.
The oral exam consist of two parts:
- An introduction of the project by the students (approx. 5-8 min.)
- Followed by a questioning session into the curriculum.
The evaluation is based on the student"s ability to handle the complexity of the curriculum.

Marking: According to the Danish "scale of 12" (7 point grading scale).
