Basic Science (Spring 2010)

Objective : To prepare the student for further studies in engineering or science.
To introduce the student to the concepts of basic chemistry and physics (mechanics, thermodynamics and basic electric circuits).
To introduce to methods and problem-solving strategies in chemistry and physics.
Principal Content : a. Atoms, ions, molecules, salts. The Periodic Table of Elements. Chemical bonding. Simple reactions.

b. Stoichiometry.

c. Thermodynamics: Temperature and heat. Quantity of heat. Calorimetry and phase Changes.
The first law of thermodynamics.

d. Introduction to electric circuits: Electric charge and current. Resistance. Electromotive force. Energy and power in electric circuits. Measuring instruments.

e. Mechanics: Motion along a straight line. Force. Pressure and buoyancy. Newton"s laws. Work, energy and power.
Teaching method : Lectures. Problem solving. Laboratory exercises.
