Målsætning : | To introduce the basic concepts and methods of strength of materials and to give an understanding of the link between the study of mechanics and materials in structural design. To provide a firm foundation for later study of Finite Element Methods (FEM). The course treats the fundamentals of mechanics of materials and the students will learn to analyse stiffness and strength of simple structures and their sub-components, including the influence of material properties. A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: • Use statics and free body diagrams to determine reactions and internal forces. • Determine stress and strain in simple, linear elastic design elements. • Understand the link between material properties and mechanics of materials. • Design and analyse axial, torsion and flexural structures as well as structures for combined loading. • Sketch the shear and bending moment diagrams for various loads on beams. • Design and analyse slender compressive structures (columns). • Apply energy methods to determine stresses and deformations in simple structures. • Use computer software, for the solution and the graphical illustration of structural design problems. • Read engineering literature on mechanics of materials. |

Hovedindhold : | Statics. Introduction to elasticity. Determinate and indeterminate trusses. Stress-strain curves. Transformation of stresses and strains. Axial, torsion and flexural loadings. Pressure vessels. Shear and bending moment diagrams. Stresses in beams and beam deflections. Design of columns structures against buckling. Energy methods. Experimental strain analysis. Introduction to Finite Element Methods (FEM). The software “Cambridge Engineering Selector” (CES) is used for interactive material selection in structural design.
Undervisningsform : | The teaching is based on “learning by doing”. There will be introductory and summing up lectures. Project work in small groups includes tutorial exercises, computer simulations and case studies

Bemærkninger : | The final evaluation of each student will be based on a four-hour written exam. A number of assignments should be submitted and approved in order to be eligible to take the exam. The assignments can be submitted groupwise. This course is closely related to the project in the 2nd semester, and is an integrated part of the study program “Engineering Design & Industrial Innovation” offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It is primarily for students enrolled in the program.
