Fluid Mechanics & Turbomachinery (Spring 2012) |
|||
Course code : | ME-FTM-U1
ECTS Credits : | 10 | Status : | Compulsory |
Placement : | 3. semester | Hours per week : | 9 |
Length : | 1 semester | Teaching Language : | English |
Principal Content : | Classification and properties of fluids. Fluid statics. Introduction to the basic principles for conservation of mass, momentum and energy for fluid mechanical systems. Conservation equations in control volume form. Inviscid flows: Bernoulli"s equation. Static, dynamic and total pressure. Dimensional analysis, modeling and similarity. Introduction to measurement techniques in fluid mechanics. Head loss in pipes and pipe systems. Drag and lift. Turbomachinery, including pumps and turbines. Compressible flow. Introduction to CFD using FLUENT or COMSOL.
Teaching method : | The pedagogy of the course is “problem-based learning”. Approximately half of the time allocated to the course will be used in guided project work in groups. The course projects will give the students an opportunity to apply basic concepts learned in the class to real-life problems, and to learn new topics in fluid mechanics, turbomachinery and CFD that are not covered in the lectures. There will be introductory and summing up lectures and the students will work in small groups with projects, problem solving, simulations and case studies. |
