Basic High Speed Electronics (Spring 2013)

Course code : EBHSE-U01
ECTS Credits : 7,5 Status : Optional for specified Programme
Placement : 5 - 7. semester Hours per week : 4
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English

Principal Content : Behavior of components at high frequencies.
Transmission Lines.
Reflection of signals depending upon load impedance.
Impedance matching.
Smith Chart.
Time domain reflection- and frequency domain measurements.
S-parameters and S-parameter measurements (Two-port measurements).
Use of measuring instruments for High Frequencies

Teaching method : 50% lectures/dialog and 50% practical design or communications planning.

During the practical part of the course, the students make 3 course assignments within component measurements, time reflection, frequency domain and high frequency amplifier design.
The student will learn about the practical aspects of high-speed electronic design (high frequency design in communication) during the assignments and how to use measurement equipment for High Frequencies.

In some weeks, especially in the end of course, all the time may be set aside for a large assignment in high frequency amplifier design. You may suggest an assignment for the last one – but it must fulfill the objectives to be approved.

The group can discuss the assignments with the teacher inside the scheduled time. Outside the scheduled time students must use e-mail. Response time objective: E-mails will be answered before the end of the following workday.

Required prequisites : Knowledge of electric and magnetic fields, basic electronics including low-frequency amplifier design (equivalent to ELF3 and KRA3).

Responsible teacher : Ib Lemvig Christoffersen , ichr@dtu.dk
