Electro-Physics 3 (Fall 2009) (Spring 2013)

Course code : EELF3-U01
ECTS Credits : 10 Status : Compulsory
Revised : 12/07 2012 Written : 08/08 2001
Placement : 3. semester Hours per week : 8
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : Danish and English

Objective : Objective
The student gains a very detailed understanding of Electrophysics. The student will be able to solve problems in theoretical and experimental situations. The course describes static and dynamic charges, electric and magnetic fields and magnetization of materials. The student achieves a scientific understanding of electronic, electrotechnique and nature phenomenons. This enables the student to understand other courses and to be creative and innovative.

Goals
For each chapter, there is a detailed list of goals. This list is made as a questionnaire with formulas, figures and examples. The student should be able to explain the goals in written form in the tests and in the assignments and in oral form at the exam.

Learning objectives

Written tests (individual)
1. Derivation of the most important formulas, solving small problems etc.

Written assignments (groupwise)
2. Explaining theory and examples according to the questionnaire.

Oral exam at the whiteboard using the questionnaire (individual)
3. Write and scantily explain the most fundamental details from the questionnaire
4. Explain most of the details from the questionnaire
5. Explain all details from the questionnaire almost perfectly
Principal Content : Static charge distribution and the concept of flux.
Electric and magnetic forces, induction, Maxwell’s equations.
E-fields with and without dielectric materials (polarization, P and D-fields)
B-fields with and without magnetic materials (magnetization, M and H-fields, magnetization curves and magnetic circuits).
Teaching method : Lessons two times a week (in total 7 hours):
The teacher lectures on theory and presents experiments.
Small written test in formulas etc. at the end of each chapter.
The students present theory and examples from the questionnaire.

Homework and group work (ca. 9 hours a week)
Preparing the written tests. There will be held one individual test for each chapter.
Preparation of assignments and training oral presentations.
During the semester each group should write, hand-in and present one assignment for each chapter. The assignment describes theory and experiments in a chapter using the questionnaire for the chapter as a guideline. The group presents the assignment for the teacher, when they hand-in the assignment.

Required prequisites : -
Recommended prerequisites : Basic vector calculations, scalar and vector product, triple scalar product, basic differentiation and integration in 3 variables.
Relations : Circuit theory and electronics, Switch mode power supply, Regulation technique, Electrotechnique*, Superconductivity*, electric machines, transformers, and high voltage devices. *) This Electrophysics course is a mandatory requirement.
Type of examination : Look under remarks
External examiner : Internal
Marking : 7 step scale
Remarks : The individual tests are carried out in the class without any aid.

The oral exam is individual and is carried through as follows:
The chapters are divided into 4 groups. The student picks one chapter from each group, i.e. the student picks 4 chapters. Thereafter the teacher asks questions corresponding to the questionnaires from the 4 chapters. It should take 15-20 minutes in total.

The grade at the oral exam is based on the 7 step scale (12 is maximum)
2 is given for the fulfilment of learning objectives 1 - 3
7 is given for the fulfilment of learning objectives 1 - 4
12 is given for the fulfilment of learning objectives 1 - 5

The final evaluation is based on the quality of the oral presentation (70% weight) and on the total score of the written tests (30%).

During the semester each group should write and hand-in an assignment for each chapter. All assignments should be approved by the teacher to enter for the exam.
The students settle down in groups the first day, 2-5 students per group.
A student, that does not work active in a group, and is not present three times during the group presentations, are considered to be inactive in the groupwork and may be refused to enter for the exam.
A student should not follow the lessons more than once. If a student has to repeat the course, the student should contact the teacher within a week after the first day in the semester in order to plan the activity for the student.

Teaching material : Web-based teaching material.
The notes and assignments produced by the students themselves.
