Digital Electronics 1 (Forår 2013)

Kursuskode : EPRODE1-U1
ECTS Point : 10 Status : Obligatorisk
Revideret : 22/12 2011 Oprettet : 22/12 2011
Placering : 1. semester Timer pr. uge : 8
Længde : 1 semester Undervisningssprog : Engelsk hvis der er engelsksprogede tilstede

Målsætning : The student obtains a theoretical and practical basis for systematic development of digital hardware using a suitable hardware description language – currently VHDL.
The student obtains an understanding of fundamental concepts and theories concerning digital electronics.
The student obtains theoretical and practical knowledge of digital hardware components and their applications.
Through exercises and assignments the student develops general engineering qualifications and procedures concerning teamwork, planning, specification, analysis and design, simulation and verification of models as well implementation, test, and documentation.

Learning outcomes:

In DIG1:

1. Use concepts, theory, components, methods and tools introduced in the course.
2. Analyse and design (i.e. modularise, outline and describe) combinatorial and sequential digital circuits and also simulate, implement, and test these circuits using VHDL.
3. Plan, specify, document and work in teams and in relation to that apply relevant engineering terms.
4. Relate specifications, calculations, simulations and measurements and draw clear and relevant conclusions.
5. Hypothesize the reasons for differences between simulated and actual results and discuss the hypothesis from relevant theory or from relevant simulations and test.

For the Project:

1. Develop, document and demonstrate a product meeting given requirements.
2. Identify relevant tests for the product and systematically carry out and document these tests.
3. Demonstrate and document a systematic reduction of the whole project into well defined problem areas.
4. Identify and engineer measurements/experiments/tests to achieve clarification within the problem areas in question
5. Outline alternative solutions and document specific choices between these.
Hovedindhold : Binary and hexadecimal number systems,
• Boolean algebra and truth tables
• Combinational circuits
• Flip-flops,
• Sequential circuits including counters and state machines.
• Programmable logic devices (PLD).
• VHDL-program structure for combinational and sequential digital circuits including state machines
• Structural design using block diagrams and/or structural VHDL description.
• Test combinational and sequential digital circuits.
Undervisningsform : The teaching is a combination of class teaching and exercises and solving a number of assignments which are mandatory and carried out in groups.
Krævede forudsætninger : -
Anbefalede forudsætninger : -
Relationer : DIG1 is a prerequisite for all the following study modules in the field of digital electronics, and TVP4E/I.
Prøveform : Se under bemærkninger
Censur : Intern
Bedømmelse : 7-trinsskala
Bemærkninger : Oral examination based on project (DIG1)

If DIG1 is taken as an elective course the examination will be oral based on mandatory assignments. And the learning objectives from project part are not taken into consideration.

DIG1: Before the exam can be taken, all mandatory assignments and tests must be done and approved.

Project: A project carried out in teams of 3 to 4 students in the last weeks (typical 2 to 3 weeks).

Before the examination: Each member is allocated approximately 5 minutes to give a well prepared presentation of the product. The team members are required to coordinate their presentations in such a way that the major aspects of the project are covered, that the presentations are different and that each individual presentation has a good technical span.

Examination: approx. 25 minutes per student.

Grades are given as follows:

02
For a minimum of basic knowledge and routine corresponding to the learning outcomes points 1.

7
For knowledge, routine and behaviour corresponding to the learning outcomes points 1 to 3.

12
For knowledge, routine, behaviour and reflective skills corresponding to all the learning outcomes points 1 to 5.
