Superconductivity (Spring 2013)

Course code : ESUPER-U1
ECTS Credits : 7,5 Status : Optional for specified Programme
Placement : 5. - 7. semester Hours per week : 12
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English if English students are present

Principal Content : 1. The history of superconductors
2. Practical applications
3. Important superconductors
4. Physical properties, that are different if we compare superconductors with normal conductors
5. The difference between type 1 and type 2 superconductors
6. The Meissner effect and levitation
7. The magnetic properties of type 2 superconductors
8. Using the magnetic properties to find the critical current density Jc
9. Quantum mechanical description of superconductivity
10. How to make a simple high Tc superconductor
11. Measurement of electrical and magnetic properties
Teaching method : Class hours two times per week a week (in total ca 5 hours):
The teacher presents theory and describes experiments etc.
The students present a small assignment after each chapter is finished
The students present subjects from the list of goals
Homework and group work (ca. 7 hours a week)
Preparing of assignments and training in presentation.
During the semester the groups should hand-in one assignment for each of the chapters in the course. In an assignment the group describes the theory and eventually experiments in a chapter using text and figures corresponding to the list of goals for that chapter. The group presents the assignment for the class when they hand-in the assignment.
Required prequisites : The 10 ECTS point Electrophysics course at CITE, IHK
Responsible teacher : Niels-Ebbe Dam , nida@dtu.dk
