Project Course in Distributed Systems (Spring 2013)

Course code : IPROI3-U1
ECTS Credits : 15 Status : Compulsory
Revised : 15/06 2010 Written : 13/01 2009
Placement : 3. semester Hours per week : 16
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English

Objective : The student should be able to

I Product

1. Develop, document, and demonstrate a product fulfilling all specified requirements.

2. Identify relevant tests of the whole product as well as systematically carry out and document those tests.

3. Demonstrate and document a systematic reduction to well-established problem areas.

4. Identify and prepare experiments/tests for necessary clarification within the problem areas.

5. Stipulate alternative solution models and make a well founded choice between these.

6. Design a system with well-defined rolls for servers and clients med anvendelse af relevante klient- and server-teknologier.

II Proces

1. Demonstrate abilities to work in a development team by measuring up to agreements, coordination and communication.

2. Demonstrate abilities to develop components of a distributed system in a heterogeneous environment.

3. Demonstrate a focused and systematic use of a system development methods and tools.

4. evaluate and choose which of the system development tools to use.

5. Plan, monitor and regulate a project work with a welll-defined goal for the product / the customer defined system.

III Theory and method

In solving the project work the student should demonstrate the understanding of the connection between theory and practice (1) and ablities to deliberately choose (2) as well as systematically use methods and techniques for problem solving (3).
Principal Content : the practical foundation for PROI3 is an integrated project consisting in the task of implementing a distributed system in a heterogeneous environment of clients and servers. The project rerlates to the theory and the methods taught in the semester theory courses, Distributed Systems and Databases.
Teaching method : The project work is caried out in groups of normally 4 students. The students themselves form groups at the start of the semester. The group will take part in supervisor meetings according to needs / agreements.

The project work in PROI3 is evaluated during the project process in accordance with the milestone plan of each group and agreements with the supervisors.
Required prequisites : Documented knowledge corresponding to a passed first year of studies.
Recommended prerequisites : -
Relations : -
Type of examination : Look under remarks
External examiner : External
Marking : 7 step scale
Remarks : The examination is a project examination. In a normal semester course there will be a joint examination in the project and theory subjects related to the project.
The project course and the theory courses will be given individual marks.

An examination will normally consist of the following elements:
1) Before the actual examination the group presents the project through a demonstration of the product and a well prepared presentation of all together 15 to 30 minutes.
The group members are required to coordinate the presentations in order to cover the essential parts of the project in such a way that the presentations are different and with good technical span.
2) After the presentation each group member is examined individually. The examination consists of a project discussion and an examination of the related theory subjects. Students failing the examination are adviced on how to improve their performance at a subsequent re-examination.

The project course must be done as group work. The only exemption from this rule is for students repeating the course due to previously failing it or in the case of special circumstances which could justify an exemption.
In that case a reasoned request to do the project as an individual project is sent to the Study Board.
