ECTS Credits : 5 Status : Compulsory
Revised : 16/04 2013 Written : 31/01 2012
Placement : 2. sem Hours per week : 4
Length : 1 semester Teaching Language : English if English students are present

Objective : A student who has met the objectives of the course(s) will be able to:
• Use mechanics and properties of materials in the design of machine elements.
• Apply theories of failure to predict failure of machine components subjected to static and variable loading.
• Describe capabilities and characteristics for a number of important machine elements.
• Elaborate on the working conditions and other operating conditions for components in a mechanical product.
• Identify components which are critically loaded.
• State requirements to materials and surfaces for components in machines and structure.
• Use the standards, which describe the frame for designing machine elements, including national and international standards.
• Specify tolerance requirements to machine elements and mechanical systems.
• Read engineering literature on machine design.
Principal Content : This course covers various issues in the analysis and design of the most commonly used machine components:
- Mechanical springs
- Shafts and shaft components.
- Tolerances and fits I
- Screws, fasteners, welding, bonding and joints.
- Rolling bearings, lubrication and journal bearing.
- Gears I
Teaching method : The teaching is based on class room teaching and solving problems or case studies individually or in groups.
Required prequisites : Engineering Materials, Applied Mechanics 1.
Recommended prerequisites : none
Relations : Projects 3-4, Applied Mechanics 2.
Type of examination : Four hours written examination
External examiner : Internal
Marking : 7 step scale
Remarks : This course is closely related to the semester projects in the 2nd and 3rd semester, and is an integrated part of the study program “Engineering Design & Industrial Innovation” offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
