Advanced Engineering Mathematics (Efterår 2010)

Kursuskode : ME-AEM-U1
ECTS Point : 5 Status : Tilvalg
Revideret : 14/07 2010 Oprettet : 08/12 2009
Placering : 6. semester Timer pr. uge : 4
Længde : 1 semester Undervisningssprog : Engelsk

Målsætning : The purpose of the course is to give the students experience with applied mathematics and modelling in concrete industrial case problems. The course covers various topics of engineering and industrial mathematics with an emphasis on principles, techniques and real-world applications. It introduces the students to advanced mathematical modelling through the solution of project problems from engineering, medicine or physics.

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

• Formulate a mathematical model of a technical problem.
• Analyze the mathematical model.
• Implement the model numerically, using computer software.
• Make conclusions concerning the technical problem based on the analysis.
• Apply mathematics in various industrial contexts.
• Write a project report explaining the model, the mathematical analysis, and the numerical calculations.
• Read mathematical literature on advanced engineering mathematics.
Hovedindhold : The contents of the course are subject to change, depending on the background and interests of the participants. In the present semester, It will contain the following topics:

- Ordinary differential equations: Theory, modelling as well as analytical and numerical solutions.

- Partial differential equations: Theory, modelling as well as analytical and numerical solutions.

The theoretical results of the course are illustrated by practical examples.

Undervisningsform : The teaching is based on "learning by doing". There will be introductory and summing up lectures. Project work in small groups includes tutorial exercises, assignments, computer simulations, use of internet search engines and case studies.
Krævede forudsætninger : Applied Mathematics 1 (ME-MAT1) or equivalent.
Anbefalede forudsætninger : Applied Mathematics 2 (ME-MAT2).
Relationer : The course methods can be used in many courses and projects, such as the Bachelor project.
Prøveform : Skriftlig 4-timers prøve
Censur : Intern
Bedømmelse : 7-trinsskala
Bemærkninger : The final evaluation of each student will be based on a number of course assignments (worth 50%) and a four-hour written exam (worth 50%).

This is a relevant optional course in the study program “Engineering Design & Industrial Innovation” offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It is, however, also relevant to other engineering students who are required to use mathematical modelling and industrial mathematics in their projects.
